Marcos Alonso could fill two roles for Manchester United in Luke Shaw's absence

Manchester United are in a position of weakness during this final week of the summer transfer window after an injury crisis at left-back.

Both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia are sidelined through injury and Brandon Williams has been allowed to leave the club on loan. Diogo Dalot filled in on Saturday but all his performance proved was United's need to bring in a natural left-back.

MEN Sport understands Erik ten Hag is weighing up his options in the market for this position with Marc Cucurella and Sergio Reguilon both being assessed. One namealso under consideration at United is Marcos Alonso.

The former Chelsea man has entered the final year of his contract and could head to Old Trafford to help fill the current gap in the squad. Should the Reds choose to go down the Alonso path, the Spaniard could solve two problems.

Speaking about the defender last year, Xavi hailed Alonso's versatility. "The signing of Marcos for me is extraordinary," the former central midfielder said.

"He can play as a full-back, central, he plays really well, he’s one of the few left footers we have. He’s a really good signing for us.

"I see him as quite a well rounded player, and I think it’s good for us to have alternatives." With these comments it is clear to see parallels between Alonso and Shaw.

Like the England international, Alonso is more comfortable as a left-back, but having a player who can fill at centre-back will be crucial for United this season. Clearly, Harry Maguire is out of favour so this leaves just Victor Lindelof to cover Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez.
