Sivert Nilsen reveals Aberdeen transfer surprise as veteran adds to the exploding hype surrounding Jimmy Thelin

Sivert Nilsen admitted even he was surprised that Aberdeen decided to buy him at the age of 32.

But new Dons boss Jimmy Thelin knew exactly what he was getting after working with the experienced midfielder at Elfsborg. Thelin felt Nilsen could offer something his newly-inherited team was lacking and sanctioned his purchase from SK Brann. Nilsen admitted: “I was a little surprised that the manager wanted me.

“Aberdeen is a very big club. Also, my age could be an issue because he’s been very good at developing young players. Maybe it would be tempting for him to go for a young No.6 or whatever he wanted. But I’m obviously very happy that he wanted me and I also think it could work out good for us all. I felt like I suited his system very well when we were together in Sweden.

“I think he got the best out of me and he triggered my motivation very much. He pushed some buttons that made me do the job often on the pitch.” The Norwegian might be one of the more experienced heads in the Pittodrie squad but he feels he can not only help his team but also continue to improve and get better under Thelin.

Nilsen added: “Even though I’m older than most of the guys, I’m still hungry for getting better. I still want to develop inside the team. I still see that I can get better even if my age is higher than many of the players here. I’ve always thought Scottish football would suit me, too. Both with the culture and the passion. I have a very strong passion for football and always thought coming to this country would suit me.”
