Sheffield Wednesday target Michael Smith considering offers amid Rotherham United speculation

Rotherham United striker Michael Smith has had a ‘few other offers’ as he considers his future at the club amid interest from several Championship and League One clubs - including Sheffield Wednesday.

The Millers’ marksman hit 18 goals in 45 League One appearances as his side finished second and won promotion to the Championship, garnering interest from a host of clubs in the football league. And with his contract expiring at the end of June, he could well become a free agent.

Wednesday have been reported to be interested in the 30-year-old for some time - potentially as a replacement for top-scoring Lee Gregory, should he leave - but it is unclear whether the Owls are one of the sides who have put forward a deal.

And Rotherham assistant manager Richie Barker has said Smith has had open and honest meetings with him and Millers boss Paul Warne, admitting that there have been ‘a few other offers’.

“Smudge (Smith) was quite candid about having a few other offers in that meeting…” Barker told the Rotherham Advertiser , “He can have that kind of chat with Warney, which is a good thing. They’re open with each other.

“We need to know if we’re in with a shout or whether we need to plan without him and sign a replacement. We’re not putting an exact deadline on it but we’re looking for an answer one way or the other soon. I don’t envisage a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ by Friday.”

Smith excelled in League One as part of a Rotherham side who took 90 points to finish second behind Wigan Athletic, but after four years at the New York Stadium, the former Bury man could be on the lookout for pastures new.
