Sheffield Wednesday set to sign Rotherham pair Michael Smith and Michael Ihiekwe
Sheffield Wednesday are set to sign Rotherham United duo Michael Smith and Michael Ihiekwe after the pair turned down new deals at the Millers. Paul Warne had been hopeful of keeping both players at the New York Stadium, but the Owls have done enough to lure the pair across Yorkshire.
Smith ended last season as the Millers top goal scorer as they secured automatic promotion back to the Championship. The Millers reportedly offered Smith a bumper deal back in May that would have made him the club's highest paid player, but Darren Moore's side look set to unveil his signing in the coming days.
Warne had also been confident of keeping former Tranmere Rovers defender Ihiekwe at the club. The centre-half, who was named in the PFA League One side of the year last season, also attracted interest from relegated Derby County, but the Owls have stolen the march on Wayne Rooney's side.
They would become the fourth and fifth signings so far this window after the arrivals of Will Vaulks, Ben Heneghan and David Stockdale. Moore's side are looking to win promotion back to the Championship at the second time of asking after last years play-off defeat to eventual winners Sunderland.
