Sheffield Wednesday strengthen their attacking options with the signing of Michael Smith

Sheffield Wednesday have bolstered their attack with the signing of Michael Smith. The 30-year-old will officially complete his move to Hillsborough on July 1 after rejecting a contract extension at Rotherham United.

The Owls are thought to have beaten off Championship interest from Cardiff City and Hull City to land the experienced front man. Smith played an influential role in the Millers promotion back to the Championship last term. He notched 25 goals as the Millers secured second spot and claimed the Papa John's Trophy.

Smith made over 200 appearances for Rotherham after joining the club from Bury. His previous clubs include Charlton Athletic, Swindon Town and Portsmouth.

Sheffield Wednesday might already have identified their perfect Massimo Luongo successor

Smith has become the Owls' fourth summer signing, following on from Ben Heneghan, David Stockdale and Will Vaulks. He is expected to soon be joined at Hillsborough by his Millers team-mate Michael Ihiekwe. Sources say Wednesday are close to finalising a deal for the centre-back.

When asked about Smith and Ihiekwe, manager Paul Warne told the Rotherham Advertiser: “We offered them really impressive terms but both players feel like they are going to play somewhere else. I think I know where but not definitively… I would rather rip the plaster off and move on.

“With Smudge, I was never convinced he was going to stay but with Icky I thought he might.

“As I said, the club has given them really good offers and I have been really happy with the chairman's support… We couldn't have moved the goalposts any more.”

Smith, a big, strong, physical forward, will compete with Lee Gregory, Josh Windass, Callum Paterson and Sylla Sow for a starting spot.
