Sheffield Wednesday's League One path becomes clearer after Sunderland's play-off final triumph

The League One season is over. Today's play-off final between Sunderland and Wycombe Wanderers concluded a gruelling, enthralling campaign.

The Black Cats, who knocked out Sheffield Wednesday at the semi-final stage, triumphed 2-0 at Wembley to clinch promotion to the Championship. It now means we know 23 of the teams that are guaranteed League One football next season.

Peterborough United, Derby County and Barnsley will line up in the third tier following relegation. Forest Green Rovers, Exeter City and Bristol Rovers will also compete in the division after gaining promotion out of League Two.

However, there is one place that is left to fill in League One. Mansfield and Port Vale will face off in the League Two play-off final a week today.

Expectations are high at Hillsborough after the Owls' respectable fourth-placed finish. Their target will be to avoid the play-off lottery and secure automatic promotion.

Manager Darren Moore told Yorkshire Live: "We will continue to keep working. The big thing for me is making sure that we build on some of the solid blocks we have put in place this season. We have to keep moving forward."
