Hull City's Championship journey becomes clearer after Sunderland's play-off win
Hull City will renew acquaintances with Sunderland next season, after the Black Cats ended their four-year League One stay by beating Wycombe Wanderers in the play-off final at Wembley.
Sunderland fan Elliott Embleton crashed in what proved to be the winning goal with a fizzing strike from distance, though Chairboys goalkeeper David Stockdale let the effort go straight through him 12 minutes into a nervy contest under the arch in the capital.
With Wycombe pushing for a way back into the game, leading scorer Ross Stewart struck with 10 minutes to go to make it 2-0 and send 46,460 Sunderland fans into raptures at the national stadium, amid a crowd of 72,332.
City went toe-to-toe with the Wearsiders last season in the battle for promotion, with Sunderland ultimately missing out on a place in the Championship while the Tigers celebrated their first title win in 55 years. Both games finished in draws, with the Stadium of Light meeting ending 1-1 while the key end-of-season battle in East Yorkshire finished 2-2.
The pair also met in the Carabao Cup before the league season began, City winning that one on penalties at the Stadium of Light and they met again the week before the Championship campaign got underway with Sunderland winning that friendly contest 2-1 thanks to a Will Grigg strike in injury time.
The make-up of next season's Championship will take another step forward to completion on Sunday when the Premier League season comes to an end. Either Leeds United or Burnley will join Norwich City and Watford in next season's Championship, with the Tigers' Yorkshire rivals United occupying the final drop zone spot going into the final day.
