Scott McTominay told why he could still have a role to play at Manchester United

Former Scotland international Ally McCoist has said that fellow countryman Scott McTominay has the necessary tools to flourish in Manchester United colours - but has warned that he might have to leave this summer.

The midfielder, who joined United at the age of just five years old, has been strongly linked with an exit from M16 this summer. West Ham United have expressed plenty of interest in his services and have recently seen a £30million offer rejected.

Following the arrival of Mason Mount and United's ongoing interest in Fiorentina star Sofyan Amrabat, McTominay is at risk of falling even further down the pecking order this season. The Scot started just 16 games last season and lost his place in the pecking order to Kobbie Mainoo at the start of pre-season.

United are currently well-stocked in central-midfield and are in desperate need of raising funds. McTominay, 26, is a sellable asset for United this summer and would command a respectable fee, as highlighted by the Reds' decision to reject a £30m offer.

Despite the ongoing speculation surrounding McTominay's future, McCoist, who is now regularly heard as a co-commentator and a pundit, believes McTominay can still make an impact at Old Trafford, despite admitting that he may have to move on before the end of this summer's transfer window.

"He might have to move," said McCoist. "I really hope he doesn't, because I genuinely think he could play that position for United, I genuinely think he's talented enough.
