Celtic told Ryan Fraser won't cost transfer fortune but champions still to bite

Celtic have been told they won’t need to stump up fortunes to snap up Newcastle winger Ryan Fraser.

The former Scotland ace has been offered to the Hoops and a host of clubs in England as Magpies gaffer Eddie Howe is keen to get out-of-favour 29-year-old off the books. Celtic are considering making a move with Brendan Rodgers keen to bolster his attack. But Fraser’s bumper wage package on Tyneside could still prove to be a major stumbling block – with the flying machine understood to be pocketing more than £60k per week and almost two years remaining on his contact.

Newcastle would be willing to thrash out the remainder of his deal with any interested parties but it remains to be seen if Celtic will bite. Fraser was a smash hit with the Geordies following his initial move from Bournemouth but has gradually fallen out of the picture. The former Aberdeen kid made his name under Howe at Bournemouth but the relationship soured towards the end of his time with the Cherries, only for them to be reunited at St James’ Park.

Fraser was part of Howe’s plans when he initially arrived in the North East but drifted out of the picture as the Saudi-owned club’s recruitment drive was ramped up. And the Scotland cap has been left stuck in the Magpies bomb squad and training with the kids since March.

Celtic are considering a number of options with another wide man high up on Rodgers’s list of targets. The Hoops boss is set to bolster his backline with Swedish star Gustaf Lagerbiekle poised to complete his £3m switch from Elfsborg in the next 48 hours.
