Scotland victims of utterly bizarre drubbing as Netherlands ride their luck before skelping ensues – 3 talking points

It was an evening of what could have been in Amsterdam as Scotland went down 4-0 - but passed up a boatload of chances o their own in the Dutch capital.

It was a strong, measured start for the Scots who were head and shoulders the better team for the first half hour. Lawrence Shankland could have done better with a header on 10 minutes while Ryan Christie was only denied by a spectacular Mark Flekken save after arriving to meet a Billy Gilmour cross at the back post.

But profligacy against the top teams inevitably comes at a cost though and this was no exception to that rule. The breakthrough came shortly before half-time when AC Milan's £17m man Tijjani Reijnders fired in a screamer, picking out Angus Gunn's top right hand corner from 25 yards out, and giving his team the lead virtually out of nothing. It should have been two to the hosts on 50 minutes but it was one for Angus Gunn's highlight reel when he flung himself down to his left to deny Memphis Depay. John McGinn and Christie should have done better with headers at the other end, before the best chance of the game fell to Lawrence Shankland, who was left one on one with Flekken after McTominay nicked the ball off Nathan Ake.

Anyone who's watched Hearts this season would have lumped their mortgage on him finishing it, but it was one he'll have nightmares about as he lost his cool and cracked it off the crossbar. A clear theme emerging in Amsterdam as the first hour came and went.

The Dutch then turned the screw and if their first goal was a bit of unpreventable brilliance, there was nothing like it about their second. It was as easy as you like as Cody Gakpo came in from the left and floated one in for Gini Wijnaldum, who was free as a bird in the box to nod
