Former Liverpool star Jose Enrique admits he never paid Scotland much attention before but reckons they are now primed to dump Spain on their backside.

The big-talking former La Roja U21 international previously clamped Celtic and Rangers as Champions League no-hopers but admits he's warming to Steve Clarke's achievers and admits he is now tuned in with the Tartan Army one point away from punching their plane ticket to Euro 2024 next summer. Spain know failling to beat Scotland will revive Norway's hopes of pipping them to a place at the showpiece tournament.

Speaking Grosvenor Sport, he said: "Scotland aren’t a team I grew up watching – they’re weren’t a country when you were young you’d say, ‘oh, I’m going to watch Scotland’, they’re just weren’t that kind of team! Scotland have a great team, and I actually think they can beat Spain. It’s probably a 50/50 game, and I think they’re going to make it very tough for Spain. I hope I’m wrong because I’m Spanish, but I actually believe they’re going to beat Spain. I’m going with 2-1 to Scotland. I’m not going against my nation, I’m just being honest!"

Enrique isn't willing to completely write off his homeland, however, he is not backing them as serious players ahead of the Euro 2024. He added: "I think Spain have a good side, but are they going to be candidates to win the Euros next year? I don’t think so. They’ve got a lot of good, young players, but they’re not like the old Spain we used to have with all those world class players in every position, it’s just not the case I don’t see Spain as one of the favourites to win the competition.
