Sandro Tonali available for Newcastle as Eddie Howe hails Italian's 'dignity and respect' amid gambling probe

Eddie Howe has confirmed that Sando Tonali is available for Newcastle this weekend despite an ongoing gambling investigation.

The midfielder is being probed by Italian prosecutors over alleged betting offences whilst asn AC Milan player. Tonali spoke with the authorities in Milan at the weekend, and reportedly admitted betting on Milan games and that he has a gambling problem.

Newcastle have thrown their support behind the £55million summer signing, who could be facing a ban of up to three years if found guilty. Juventus star Nicolo Fagioli has been hit with a seven month suspension, and there are fears that Tonali’s punishment could be even more severe. Aston Villa’s Nicolo Zaniolo is also under investigation, although Villa are confident that the Galatasaray loanee hasn;t been betting on football, but may have played “online card games.”

Newcastle take on Crystal Palace this weekend. And while Howe insists Tonali has trained well, he’ll make a decision on whether he’s picked closer to kick-off.

"He's had a very, very difficult couple of weeks and has been dealing with a lot. From what I can see he's handling himself really well and dealing with his emotions strongly but I'll have to make a call. I have to bring it back to football and what he's delivering on the pitch to try to make the best decision for the team.

For me, the most important part of this whole incident is Sandro and his welfare. We feel as a football club, straight away, it was to throw our arms round him and protect him to give him the love and support he needs to find solutions to the problems he has.
