Ruud van Nistelrooy's Man United 'stance' should Ruben Amorim succeed Erik ten Hag

Manchester United's current interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy is reportedly expected to depart the club if/when Ruben Amorim becomes the new boss at Old Trafford.

On Monday, Ineos came to the decision to sack Erik ten Hag after a historically poor start to the Premier League season. United's 2-1 defeat at West Ham at the weekend proved to be the final straw for Sir Jim Ratcliffe and co. as they brought an end to his tenure.

In the aftermath, United have moved quickly to seek a replacement for the Dutchman. Ten Hag's assistant Van Nistelrooy was put in temporary charge while the search for his successor began.

United agreed in principle a deal to hire Sporting's current manager on Monday, with the matter of compensation still to be agreed. On Tuesday, the Lisbon club announced that United were willing to pay them £8.3m to hire Amorim and now it seems only a matter of time before the 39-year-old is confirmed as the new head coach at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, Van Nistelrooy is preparing the players for Wednesday's clash with Leicester City in the Carabao Cup. It is unknown how long the former striker will be in charge but The Telegraph understands that once a new manager is appointed, Van Nistelrooy expects to depart the club.

Speculation had suggested that Van Nistelrooy was hired as a manager-in-waiting when he arrived in the summer. But it is believed this did not sit well with the United legend and that he did not hold desires to replace Ten Hag when he initially joined the club.

Should he leave, Van Nistelrooy will be missed by the United fanbase particularly after his return was met with such enthusiasm.
