Reading FC prospect edges towards exit

Reading are in murky waters in this summer transfer window and need to maximise their abilities in the market, amid financial constraints, to give Paul Ince a chance of keeping the club in the second tier next season.

There appears to be plenty of ins and outs yet to come at the Select Car Leasing Stadium with the countdown on ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

Tyrell Ashcroft is set to be one youngster who leaves the club this summer according to BerkshireLive.

The 17-year-old made four league starts for the Royals around the turn of the year last season, but it would seem like his race is run as far as breaking into Ince’s first team reckoning is concerned.

Ashcroft played all across the defence and in midfield for the Royals’ U23s in Premier League 2 last season, making 18 appearances, which will provide a potentially more worthwhile body of work for scouts of potential suitors to look into.

It feels more likely that Ashcroft has another EFL club lined up, to prize him away from Reading at such an early stage of his career, but, with Ince dipping into the U23 side to bulk out the first team squad at the moment, if Ashcroft is not in his considerations, an exit may have been accelerated.

The Verdict

Reading have been able to supplement their first team with talent from their youth ranks consistently in recent years, but it has never been under as much pressure to do so than in preparing for 2022/23.

The Royals were going along nicely in the first few months of last season before a dramatic drop-off, along with a six-point deduction, plunged them into a relegation battle, which seemed to make things harder for the younger players in the squad.
