Reading FC in five way transfer battle for exiled Newcastle United striker

Reading FC have been linked with a move for Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle.

The 32-year-old has two years to run on his contract at St James' Park but has been told to train with the club's U23s as he is not part of Eddie Howe's first-team plans.

Royals are said to be one of five Championship sides - along with Birmingham City, Huddersfield Town, Preston and Millwall - keen on the forward's services for the 2022/23 season.

A report by Football Insider says all five clubs have 'registered their interest' as they look to sign 'a proven striker' before the end of the transfer window. Boss Paul Ince has already brought in one striker to Reading this summer - Shane Long on a one-year deal following his release by Southampton.

He has Lucas Joao, George Puscas, Yakou Meite and Long as forward options going into the new season. Reading, who have already signed one player this summer from Newcastle in Jeff Hendrick, get their campaign started in just over a week's time away at Blackpool.
