Raphael Varane pinpoints how Manchester United must improve this season

Raphael Varane has challenged Manchester United to become more consistent this season if they are to progress under Erik ten Hag.

United enjoyed an encouraging first season under the Dutchman, winning the Carabao Cup in February and securing a place in this year's Champions League with a third-place finish. But their campaign was littered with a number of woeful performances.

Ten Hag's first two games in charge saw him beaten comfortably by Brighton and Brentford, while thrashings by Manchester City and Liverpool were humiliating. United will need to improve again if they want a top-four place and Varane has urged his team to find consistency.

“We need to be 100 per cent fit for this season," Varane told MUTV. "We have been working on the details. Tactically, we want to be ready. We want to work as a team, as a squad.

“We have to be more consistent this season. We have to repeat the good performance every three days. So it's a lot of details.

“We are working on it and hopefully we can do better this season and we want to improve all the time. So it's always a challenge for us to be better.”

Varane is going into this third campaign as a United player, having signed in the summer of 2021. The 30-year-old has established himself as one of Ten Hag's most important players, forming the backbone of his team alongside Lisandro Martinez and behind Casemiro.

The French international is expected to feature against RC Lens this afternoon, reuniting with the team he began his career at in 2002.
