Rangers pause SFA talks over VAR gripe as Philippe Clement explains why double penalty showdown is on hold

Rangers boss Philippe Clement has admitted he has not went to the SFA to seek clarity on the penalty calls against Kilmarnock yet - because of the packed fixture calendar.

The Light Blues fell behind in Ayrshire after the ball struck John Lundstram’s arm and Danny Armstrong converted from the spot before coming from behind to win and remain top of the Scottish Premiership thanks to goals from James Tavernier and Tom Lawrence. But despite the victory the Belgian was unhappy that a penalty was not awarded to Rangers as the ball appeared to strike Lewis Mayo on the arm inside the box.

After the full-time whistle, Clement demanded answers from Scottish football's governing body over "why our penalty was given against us but the late one for us was not." It comes just days after St Mirren were the latest club to be issued with an SFA apology after VAR failed to intervene in a key flashpoint. Asked if he had discussions with the SFA with other clubs landing apologies before Rangers clash with Motherwell, he said: “No I didn’t have discussions.

"It has been busy. We are 48 hours after that game, so it goes really fast. I hope for the future there can be more clarity about things.

"I know there are decisions made in the grey zone. With the handball rule it has become more difficult for referees and VAR with the way it has been decided by FIFA and UEFA - it is more difficult.

"But that is why it also important that there is more clarity. It is my job to explain to the player what is handball and what is not. If they come off the pitch feeling there was an injustice that is a problem. I am not saying that is the case, but it has to be really clear afterwards what is handball or not."
