Philippe Clement in SPFL warning as Rangers boss tells league chiefs to up their game over top flight pitch standard

Unhappy Philippe Clement has told Scottish Professional Football League chiefs they need to up their game and improve the standards of our top-flight pitches.

The Rangers boss was left frustrated after the late call-off of to their Premiership clash at Dundee. The Dens Park pitch was heavily sanded and referee Don Robertson came in for second inspection and deemed the surface unplayable less than two hours before kick-off.

Clement stated that Scottish football has rules for floodlighting, etc and now they must do the same for pitch because they should be the one area that should be elite. He said: “It’s a very important thing for the future that a league thinks about how to raise the level of the pitches and put standards on that like they do on other things. They have standards with things like lighting, for example, to have a good broadcast of the game and to have a good product. Sure, the lights are really important. But even more important is the quality of the pitches, I think.”

Clement points to the fact that the Dundee game was the only fixture that went off across Scotland’s top four leagues this weekend. “This will be the only pitch in all the leagues in Scotland where a game was postponed, the Belgian stated.

“That tells me that it has nothing to do with the weather. Yes, it rained, but it rained all over Scotland and there were pitches in other lower leagues where they could play football. There, the ball was bouncing. But here, the ball was not bouncing. So clearly there is something wrong.”
