Punjab United manager Chipie Sian reacts to 1-1 draw at Cockfosters in the FA Vase semi-final first leg

Punjab United boss Chipie Sian praised his players after a solid defensive display on Saturday.

United returned from their FA Vase semi-final first leg at Cockfosters with a 1-1 draw, meaning it’s all to play for next weekend in Gravesend.

The Southern Counties East League side led at the break through Wayne Bushell but were pegged back in the last 10 minutes.

The match was dominated by a strong wind blowing straight down the pitch, effectively pinning one team in for 45 minutes.

“We knew what they were all about and I think the game plan was set up well,” said Sian.

“I thought we were a better team in the first half. I thought we defended really well in the second half.

“I don't think they deserved the goal. I don't think it was a goal. Everyone on the line said it didn't go over. The linesman couldn't justify it to me at the end but these things happen.

“It was a tough game, we knew it was going to be like that. We knew the weather and the pitch is quite narrow but we're used to this, we don't complain about pitches. This is what it is. You've got to get on with it.

“I just felt in the second half, I said to them, ‘look, you're going to have to suck it up a little bit as they're going to come with long balls and long throws’.

“We're used to that, we can defend that. I thought we defended absolutely brilliantly.”

Cockfosters had claims for a first-half penalty after Jordan Campbell handled in the area when the ball bounced up and hit him, while Punjab’s Roman Campbell had arguably greater claims for a spot-kick in the second half when he appeared to be fouled.

“If he's going to give the handball, then he's going to have to give Roman's penalty - you'll be here all day giving penalties!” said Sian.
