Whitstable Town manager Jamie Coyle out to right wrongs from last season’s 3-2 Kent Senior Trophy final loss as they play Punjab United at Maidstone United in this year’s showpiece
Jamie Coyle admits Whitstable will be out to right some wrongs in the Kent Senior Trophy final.
The Oystermen, who have already been confirmed as Southern Counties East League Premier Division champions, are up against FA Vase semi-finalists Punjab United at Maidstone United this Sunday (3pm) - 12 months on from last year’s 3-2 final loss to Larkfield & New Hythe at the same venue.
Whitstable were made to pay for going 3-0 behind despite fighting back through an own goal and substitute Jake McIntyre’s second-half penalty.
Manager Coyle thinks the prospect of playing in last term’s FA Vase final at Wembley - a match the Oystermen won - was already in players’ minds. But he won’t accept any excuses this time.
“In the back of people’s minds, there was Wembley on the horizon,” recalled Coyle.
“There is no hiding the fact that people were probably subconsciously thinking they could get injured and not make it to Wembley. That definitely had an impact.
“Even we look at ourselves as a management team and say ‘Did we do everything we possibly could last time in terms of the preparations in the build-up?’.
“We don’t always look at the players when things don’t go well.
“It’s about looking at ourselves, as well, and we’re making sure we make a really big thing of this cup final.
“The preparation is really important. It’s an opportunity to finish this season on a real high.
“We have a celebration day on Sunday, May 3, at the club and we want to make sure we have two trophies there.”
Whitstable have beaten Rusthall (3-0), Fisher (5-1), Croydon (4-1) and Holmesdale (4-0) en route to the final while Punjab have seen off FC Elmstead (3-2), Bearsted (3-2), Greenways (9-8 on penalties after a 0-0 draw) and SE Dons (9-8 on penalties after
