Premier League limit could force Aston Villa into summer transfer rethink
Aston Villa could be forced into a summer squad rethink due to the increasing number of senior overseas players within Steven Gerrard's first-team.
Premier League clubs can name up to 25 players in their squad at the end of each transfer window, with no more than 17 of those registered allowed from overseas.
Villa named a 20-man squad at the beginning of February, following the conclusion of their January transfer window business, and 11 of those included are classed as overseas players.
Emiliano Martinez, Matty Cash, Kortney Hause, Tyrone Mings, Ashley Young, Calum Chambers, Danny Ings and Ollie Watkins were the homegrown (HG) players named by Villa.
Clubs didn’t have to name players who were born on or after January 1, 2000 - hence why first team stars Jacob Ramsey and Carney Chukwuemeka weren’t named.
When Frederic Guilbert, Anwar El Ghazi, Trezeguet and Conor Hourihane return from respective loans, it would put the squeeze on Villa's capacity to sign more overseas players in the summer. Although, all four players could also leave the club in the summer, with Hourihane's contract up at the end of the season and the futures of Guilbert, El Ghazi and Trezeguet in doubt.
Villa might therefore need to reshuffle their pack in order to add more overseas players during the summer transfer window.
