Piccadilly incident LIVE: Emergency services swarm office block near station - updates

Emergency services have descended on an office block near Piccadilly station following reports of a suspicious package. Police are in attendance at Piccadilly Gate, on Store Street, this afternoon (February 16).

Greater Manchester Police confirmed there is an ongoing incident with emergency services at the scene. Further details are yet to be confirmed.

Ten-storey office block Piccadilly Gate was formerly known as Rail House. It is home to several Government departments, including the Department for Education, Ofsted and National Highways.

The building sits to the east of Piccadilly railway station, near to the Piccadilly Village flats and the Ashton Canal, on Store Street between the city centre and Great Ancoats Street.

Piccadilly Gate is home to civil servants working across a number of different Government departments.

The 10-storey building was refurbished in 2009 and is let out to departments including Ofsted, National Highways and the Department for Education.

It was earmarked for demolition as part of plans for the arrival of HS2 in Manchester, before the planned railway north of Birmingham was scrapped.
