Paul Heckingbottom offers verdict on Morgan Gibbs-White’s progress at Sheffield United
Morgan Gibbs-White has been a shining light in a fairly difficult season for Sheffield United following their relegation from the Premier League.
The Blades seem to have come out the other side of the most challenging periods and broke into the play-off places with an emphatic 4-0 win over Swansea City at the weekend.
Gibbs-White carried on his eye-catching form, since joining on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers towards the back end of the summer transfer window, with two goals and an assist as the Blades dismantled the Swans in front of a jubilant home crowd.
Paul Heckingbottom explained what Gibbs-White’s most important contribution to the team is when he spoke to the Sheffield Star.
He said: “We all know he’s got it, we all know that.
“But the reason I’m comfortable talking about Morgan is because he works hard.
“If Morgan doesn’t work hard, then the whole thing doesn’t work because a good team will beat good individuals every day of the week.
“The moment someone doesn’t do that, show that work ethic, then they become a liability.
“Morgan gets that and the fact he does, for me, is much more important than all of the other really eye-catching stuff he does.
“If Morgan, or anyone else for that matter, isn’t prepared to work for the rest of the group then they don’t play.
“They know that, it’s simple. But these lads do work for each other, because they have that in them.
“They want to do it and they know how important it is.”
It does feel like this will be the last spell Gibbs-White spends in the Championship for some time with clear ability to play in the Premier League.
Getting the best out of him in the final few months of the season should safely steer the Blades towards a top six finish.
