Owen Bevan wanted for Hibs transfer as Nick Montgomery hopes to reap more Bournemouth benefits

Hibs are keen on a move for Bournemouth defender Owen Bevan. The Wales U21 international has been targeted by Nick Montgomery as a solution to their seriously stretched backline and a deal could be struck before next Thursday’s deadline.

Bevan spent the first half of the season on loan at Cheltenham Town making 14 appearances for the League One strugglers. He returned to the Cherries at the start of this month after suffering a thigh injury. But Bevan, who has five Wales U21 caps, is close to full fitness and Record Sport understands the 20-year-old could be set for Hibs with the two clubs in negotiations over a deal. He's set to join Cheries teammate Emiliano Marcondes at Easter Road, while midfielder Nathan Moriah-Welsh is also on the radar.

Montgomery revealed on Friday that he was hopeful of adding a new defender to his ranks with Rocky Bushiri on international duty at the African Cup of Nations with the DR Congo and Riley Harbottle having been sent on loan to Colchester United.

Jordan Obita had to fill in at left centre half against Rangers on Wednesday with Paul Hanlon suffering from illness. And while Hanlon is set to return against Kilmarnock on Saturday Montgomery is still desperate to strengthen his backline which has the second worst goals against record in the top flight.

Speaking on Friday, he said: “We are close to bringing in another defender. Until we get Rocky Bushiri back, we’re light in that area, even if Paul Hanlon returns from his illness. It won’t happen before tomorrow’s game, that’s for sure.” Bevan has made two top team appearances for Bournemouth, with his debut in a League Cup victory over Norwich City in August 2022.
