Sir David Gray’s moment of Hibs history makes hairs on back of my neck stand up confesses Nick Montgomery
Nick Montgomery says Sir David Gray offers a daily reminder of the Scottish Cup’s vital importance to Hibs.
And, as the Easter Road boss aims to keep his side on course for a 2016 trophy repeat, he’s warning those troops to be cautious of no VAR in the Highlands. Montgomery takes his team to face Inverness Caley Thistle aware of what it would mean to his club to again go all the way. Gray’s affectionate nickname amongst the supporters after ending 114 years of hurt with a winning goal against Rangers provides ample evidence.
Montgomery, who lost in the semi-finals of the Viaplay Cup, said: “I don’t need reminding of the success because David is my assistant. “Everyone calls him Sir David Gray, but he’s a really humble guy and probably doesn’t like that tag. But you see photos around the training ground and in the gym with that moment when he scored the winning goal.
"You hear the stories, see the YouTube videos and it makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. It’s great history and every cup competition is a great opportunity.”
Montgomery laughed when asked if Sir Nick had a nice ring to it and smiled: “Well, it would be nice! Nah, I don’t think anyone can take that tag off him! “ got to the semi-final in the last one and I thought we were unlucky not to make the Final. Probably best not to talk about VAR again.”
Montgomery’s reference to VAR comes after frustrations with the technology during that semi defeat to Aberdeen. Hibs were again at the centre of big on-screen calls during the midweek loss to Celtic, but there will be no technology in operation for the cup clash.
