'No excuses' - Luke Shaw makes Manchester United admission after West Ham defeat

Although Luke Shaw recognised Manchester United have suffered a great number of injuries this season, he insisted there cannot be excuses for the team's poor results.

Raphael Varane was unavailable to play West Ham on Saturday afternoon due to illness, which meant an opportunity was given to Willy Kambwala to make his debut alongside Jonny Evans.

The centre-back pairing was the 10th used by United this season amid an injury crisis that has depleted options.

The injuries have not just been picked up by defenders, though, and United have now recorded 32 cases of injury or illness that has caused a player to miss a game this season.

That has been a factor in the team's struggles and while Shaw, speaking after the 2-0 defeat against West Ham, agreed that the problem has contributed, he insisted there can't be excuses.

"We can't feel sorry for ourselves, we have to pick ourselves up and go again because it's a home game and we can't keep dropping points. We have to win games," Shaw told TNT Sports.

"It's difficult [to stay positive] but it's our job. We have to stay positive, this is Manchester United, one of the biggest clubs in the world, and it's not good enough, the results that have been coming and we know that.

"We have to dig deep and have to look at ourselves in the mirror and question ourselves and go from there. To be honest, now excuses, any player who steps out on the pitch for Manchester United has to be good enough to win games and that's it really, I can't say anything else.
