Nick Montgomery names Rangers the BEST team in the league as Hibs boss hails VAR 'justice'

Hibs boss Nick Montgomery declared that "justice" prevailed after Rangers were awarded a penalty at Ibrox - before naming Philippe Clement's side the best in Scotland.

Early in the first half, the hosts were given a spot kick after Hibees defender Nectarios Triantis collided with Gers man John Souttar as he tried to jump to win a header inside the area. Light Blues skipper James Tavernier saw his penalty kick saved, with Scott Wright reacting quickest to stab home the rebound.

However, a VAR review then found Wright guilty of encroachment in the box just before Tavernier struck the penalty kick, and the goal was chalked off. In the end it made little difference, as Tavernier opened the scoring minutes later with a fine half volley. Hibs got themselves back on level terms when Comoros international Myziane Maolida scored in first half injury time only for Cyriel Dessers to restore the home side's lead with the last kick of the ball before the interval.

Montgomery's men stayed in the game for large portions of the second half until Rangers substitute Rabbi Matondo wrapped up the points with five minutes to go with a fine finish. The Easter Road boss was relieved that the contentious penalty decision that went against his team did not result in a goal but admits the Hibees were no match for a Rangers team that he reckons are the best in the league.

Speaking to the media after the game, he said: "Thankfully for us there was a foot in the box which meant the goal was disallowed, which we felt was justice. You need a bit of luck when you come to places like this.

"We got back in the game but then conceded just before half-time. So on the basis of that, we didn't deserve anything.
