Motherwell CEO backs boss Stuart Kettlewell and provides player budget update

Outgoing Motherwell CEO Derek Weir has backed boss Stuart Kettlewell and says the club can’t afford to sack the gaffer every time they go on a bad run.

Weir says Kettlewell will have money to spend this month to sign players.

The sale of striker Conor Wilkinson to Colchester United, recall of defender Brodie Spencer by Huddersfield and the release of young star Sam Campbell following a lengthy injury has provided extra funds for Kettlewell to bring in new stars.

But in a wide-ranging interview on Motherwell’s YouTube channel, Weir said they do need to balance the books.

Motherwell recently arrested a run of 15 Premiership games without a win, as they beat Livingston 3-1 after a three-month period without many points.

Weir said: “We then get to the three-month period there where we drew six games, lost five games by a single goal – three of them were Rangers, Celtic and Hearts – we probably had three performances that you would probably class as ‘unacceptable’.

“One of those was in very difficult conditions at Livingston, and probably the worst of all was on a very difficult night at Dingwall.

“The reality of the situation is that bad runs are going to happen. I’m pretty convinced we have a bottom-three budget and going back to [outside] investment, that might be able to help that.

“We are going to go on bad runs. I think we have a superb management team here, with a great structure below it. The people here work so hard, and for me it’s very clear that the players are behind this management team.

“Every time we go on a three-month bad run, we cannot be in a position where we change the manager every time that happens.
