Motherwell 1 Celtic 3: Stoppage time strikes stun Steelmen in heartbreaking defeat

Motherwell were left heartbroken after two stoppage time strikes from Celtic denied them a deserved point and kept the Hoops on Rangers' coattails at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

It looked like the Steelmen would earn a draw after Blair Spittal's stunner two minutes from half-time gave the Steelmen the lead at the break was cancelled out by Celtic substitute Adam Idah six minutes into the second half of a pulsating encounter in North Lanarkshire.

But the Hoops fought to the death and Idah netteed in the fourth minute of added on time to leave Stuart Kettlewell's side stunned, before Luis Palm rubbed salt into the wounds with a third goal in the 96th minute.

Motherwell stay ninth in the table, while Celtic are now back to within two points of leaders Rangers, who the Steelmen visit next weekend.

Kettlewell made one change from last week's 2-0 defeat to Hearts, with Harry Paton dropping out and Blair Spittal returning to the side after injury.

The Hoops made four changes following last week's 1-1 draw with Kilmarnock, where the visitors grabbed a last-gasp equaliser.

Stephen Welsh, Anthony Ralston, Luis Palma and Adam Idah made way for Nicolas Kuhn, Alistair Johnston, Tomoki Iwata and Maik Nawrocki.

Motherwell thought they had got off to the perfect start inside the third minute when Theo Bair produced a stunning piece of skill inside the box to leave Liam Scales for dead and fire the ball into the the bottom corner. However, his effort was ruled out for offside and a VAR check confirmed the decision from the assistant referee.
