Uganda call-up was 'special moment' for Motherwell star Bevis Mugabi

Bevis Mugabi intends to keep impressing for Motherwell and Uganda, after being called up for a friendly double-header next week.

The Cranes take on Comoros on Friday, March 22, and Ghana the following Tuesday, in preparation for their next World Cup qualifiers in June.

Ahead of that, the Steelmen welcome third-bottom Aberdeen to Fir Park tomorrow, and Mugabi intends to keep playing his own game.

Mugabi says receiving a call-up from new boss Put Paul Joseph is good for him, but even better for his mum.

The 28-year-old defender said: “It’s always nice to get called up for your country and represent them, play games for them, and hopefully get as many games for them as possible.

“It’s another good achievement for myself.

“It gives the whole dressing room a lift. Quite a lot of the boys [Theo Bair (Canada) and Liam Kelly [Scotland)]have been called up, which is good for the club and themselves as well. It seems like we’re heading in the right direction.

“It means a lot, to be honest, I think more so for my family and my mother, seeing them happy.

“As soon as the call-up came through, my mother was calling me to say how excited she was for me, so it was a nice moment.

“Making my mum proud and my brothers proud is what it’s all about for me, for sure. It’s a special moment.”

Mugabi added: “It’s just two friendlies, that we’re going to play, and the next qualifier is in June, so it’s in preparation for those games.

“It’s good to be involved and we have a new coach as well, so he’s going to try and impress what he wants from us, and hopefully we can do that for him.”

Mugabi was part of the Motherwell side that beat Rangers 2-1 at Ibrox, the Steelmen’s first league victory there in 27 years, but says the focus immediately shifted
