Matt O'Riley addresses Celtic transfer bid from Atletico Madrid and makes clear he's anything but upset

Matt O’Riley insists he was “not upset” about Celtic knocking back a megabucks bid from Atletico Madrid as he broke his silence on the Spanish giants making a move for him in January - and refused to rule out the possibility of a summer move.

The midfielder admitted the Parkhead side wanted more money, with the La Liga cracks looking to sign the 23-year-old on a loan with an £18million obligation to buy. The, however, Hoops were seeking a fee of £25m.

Sections of the Celtic support have pointed to O’Riley being denied the chance of a move to the Metropolitano Stadium as a possible factor in what they see as a dip in from the man who signed for a bargain £1.5m from MK Dons under Ange Postecoglou. Ex Parkhead strike hero Chris Sutton dismissed that theory in his Record Sport column at the weekend and now O’Riley, while on international duty with Denmark, has opened up on the interest for the first time in an interview with Danish magazine Tipsbladet.

O’Riley - who has netted 11 goals this season - confirmed: “Celtic received an offer from them (Atletico Madrid), and that was cool. I wasn't really close to leaving because Celtic wanted more money. I'm not upset about it. For me, it was just cool that a club like them would want me. It's not often you receive an offer from Atletico Madrid, so of course, it's great.” On the prospect of the Spanish side reviving their interest or potentially moving to another club in the summer, he left the door open for a summer move: “We have to see what happens.”
