Manuel Ugarte could get dream squad number amid Manchester United transfer ploy

The wait goes when it comes Manchester United and their pursuit of Manuel Ugarte.

United have been heavily linked with a move for the Paris Saint-Germain midfielder this summer as Erik ten Hag looks to strengthen his squad. So far, Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee are the only new first-team signings to be made by the Reds since the transfer window opened back in June.

Ugarte is one of four midfielders who have been placed on a transfer shortlist for United this summer. One of them was Joao Neves, who has now completed a move to PSG from Benfica in a deal potentially worth up to €70million (£60million).

Now that Neves has signed for PSG, the likelihood of Ugarte being granted an exit has increased. However, a report from The Athletic has claimed that United will only consider signing Ugarte if PSG lowered their asking price of €60million (£51million), and will look at other targets in the meantime. Should the midfielder complete a move to Old Trafford then United may be able to grant him his dream squad number.

Ugarte currently wears the No.4 shirt for PSG and the No.25 for Uruguay, including most recently at the Copa America this summer. At least one of those numbers could be available for Ugarte to have this summer should he sign for United.

The No.4 shirt was previously worn by Sofyan Amrabat last season during his loan spell from Fiorentina. United signed Amrabat on loan with a fee worth €10million (£8.6million) with the option of making the move permanent for a fee of €25million (£21million) including add-ons.

The No.25 shirt is currently occupied
