Manchester United transfer news RECAP Cristiano Ronaldo 'offer', Martinez and De Jong updates

Manchester United are gearing up to take on Melbourne Victory in Australia, but there looks to be heightened activity away from the pitch too.

The club are nearing a deal for Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez with a second bid expected imminently after United's initial £37m bid was turned down. His employers are bracing for his exit with United keen to strike up a deal.

Meanwhile, the Frenkie de Jong transfer saga continues. United have been in negotiations with Barcelona for almost 10 weeks. A deal in principle has been agreed but it appears the player would rather stay in Spain.

TODAY'S BIG TALKING POINT: Are United spending too much time trying to chase De Jong? Have your say here.

Now, United have reportedly set De Jong an ultimatum to decided whether he wants a United move by the end of this week.

A recap of the day's United news.

Manchester United fans on social media were sent into frenzy on Thursday evening when fans had thought the former Manchester City winger Ferran Torres had dropped a major hint about Frenkie de Jong's future at Barcelona. United have chased De Jong's signature for over two months with Erik ten Hag identifying him for his midfield.

Manchester United have agreed a deal with Barcelona for De Jong, 25, and hope to sign the midfielder whilst on tour in Australia. Reports have further emerged today that although a fee has been agreed, no agreement has been made between the player and United.

Spanish sources have told the Manchester Evening News that De Jong has accepted he will have to leave Barcelona and the club's president, Joan Laporta, is waiting for the transfer to go through before sanctioning moves in the market.
