Manchester United 'told Giorgio Scalvini price-tag' and more transfer rumours

Manchester United will have to pay at least €50million (around £43m) if they are to sign Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini, according to reports in Italy.

Central defence is one of four key areas identified by Erik ten Hag to strengthen next summer, with growing concerns regarding the Dutchman's current crop of talent. Harry Maguire could look for more regular minutes elsewhere, while Raphael Varane is struggling with continued injury problems.

United are thought to have held a long-term interest in Scalvini but Tuttomercato reports that the centre-back will not come cheap, with Atalanta demanding €50m for their young star. Part of the reason for their high price tag was to avoid losing too many key players, having lost Rasmus Hojlund this summer.

Scalvini burst onto the scene as one of Europe's most promising young defenders during the 2021/2022 campaign and has been a regular feature for Atalanta over three seasons. Still just 19 years old, he already has three caps for the Italian national team.

Elsewhere, 90min reports that United are among a number of Premier League clubs keeping an eye on Feyenoord youngster Quinten Timber.

The 22-year-old is the twin brother of Jurrien Timber, who played under Ten Hag at Ajax and was consistently linked with a move to Old Trafford before joining Arsenal in the summer. The versatile midfielder has enjoyed an excellent spell with Feyenoord, who won the Eredivisie last season under Arne Slot.
