Manchester United star walking European suspension tightrope

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes is at risk of a European suspension after picking up his second yellow card of the Champions League during the 3-3 draw with Galatasaray.

Fernandes was booked on Wednesday night after committing a foul on the edge of the area as the hosts were looking to burst forward. The tackle resulted in a free kick for the Turkish giants from which Hakim Ziyech scored.

While the consequences of the booking were not felt at the time, Fernandes is on a tight rope in European football. Should he receive a third booking before the completion of the quarter-finals, the Portugal midfielder would serve a one-match ban.

United and Fernandes are not guaranteed to be in the Champions League past next month's game with Bayern Munich. After last night's point, the Reds know they must beat Bayern at Old Trafford and hope Galatasaray and FC Copenhagen draw to earn progress to the knockout stages.

However, should the Reds finish third in Group A they will qualify for a Europa League play-off. And yellow cards accumulated in the Champions League are passed on to the secondary European competition meaning Fernandes remains at risk of a ban.

Currently, United's chances of reaching the latter stages of either European competition are slim given they sit bottom of the group. But a victory against Bayern no matter the result in the other game will give them at least Europa League football. Last season, the Reds reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League before being eliminated by eventual winners Sevilla 5-2 on aggregate.
