Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes told he was a 'cry-baby' in Bournemouth defeat

Former Celtic and Chelsea striker Chris Sutton has accused Bruno Fernandes of acting like a 'cry-baby' in the closing stages of Manchester United's 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth on Saturday.

Fernandes was booked with just over five minutes of the contest remaining for saying something to referee Peter Bankes. It marked his fifth yellow card of the season, ruling him out of Sunday's trip to Anfield to face Liverpool.

Premier League rules state that any player who earns five yellow cards within their side's opening 19 league matches must serve a one-match suspension. As a result, it will be the first league game the Portuguese international has missed since United's 3-1 defeat to Aston Villa at Villa Park in November 2022.

Fernandes' decision to talk his way into Bankes' notebook has been blasted by Sutton, who is now a regular pundit for BBC Sport. As well as describing him as a 'cry-baby', he also claimed that it was 'poor leadership' for the United skipper.

Sutton, penning his column for the Mail, said: "There was one quote in particular from Bruno Fernandes which summed up the alarmingly poor attitude among United's players. It was his admission that they thought it was 'going to be easy'.

"United underestimated Bournemouth and they were schooled because of that. I was at Old Trafford to witness this latest shambolic showing from Erik ten Hag's team. They lost possession 161 times.
