Manchester United set to break 10-year transfer record after agreement reached

The sale of Mason Greenwood this summer looks set to beat a post-Sir Alex Ferguson record for Manchester United with the forward on the verge of leaving Old Trafford.

After being sent on loan to Getafe last season, Greenwood’s performances caught the eye, after he scored eight times and provided six assists in 33 La Liga performances. The Spanish side were keen to sign him on a permanent deal but were unwilling to match United’s asking price.

That prompted interest from several other clubs, including Lazio and Marseille. And it seems like the latter are now closing in on a move for Greenwood with the Athletic reporting that an agreement has been reached with both United and the player over a transfer.

The move was put into doubt following criticism from supporters and the mayor of Marseille. Greenwood was suspended in January 2022 after being arrested for attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviours and assault, but the case was dropped and all charged were withdrawn.

If the transfer to Marseille is completed, then it will see United earn an initial €27.6 million (£23.3m) with the fee potentially rising to €31.6 million (£26.7m) with add-ons. The profit made, seeing as Greenwood is an academy graduate, will be the most made since the retirement of Ferguson in 2013.

The sale will come as a boost to United in terms of the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSRs). Due to him being an academy player, money made will go down as pure profit in the books for the 2024/25 season.
