Manchester United's stance on renaming Old Trafford after interest from £60m sponsor

Manchester United have promised to keep fans informed about the possibility of selling Old Trafford's naming rights.

Although United intend to submit plans for a new Old Trafford by the end of the year, early estimations suggest 2028 could be the earliest date a new stadium is completed.

United have made minor improvements to Old Trafford this summer - repainting quadrants and refurbishing the tunnel - and the current stadium will remain home for the next few years at least.

United's new shirt sponsor, Snapdragon, have expressed an interest in buying the naming rights, recently saying it could 'make sense' to negotiate a deal to rename Old Trafford.

Snapdragon's chief marketing officer, Don McGuire, has indicated 'Old Trafford' would still be included in any potential renaming, something that is important for supporters.

Last month, United said they are looking at 'funding options' which include selling the naming rights to Old Trafford. "You may have seen the media speculation around naming rights and ticket prices – and it was just that: speculation," United's chief operating officer, Collette Roche, said.

"We must look at all possible funding options, but it’s still early stages with no decisions made. What we can promise is that fans – through this forum and other channels – will be kept informed and consulted every step of the way."

Roche was challenged on stadium naming rights by a fan representative at the fans' forum, who expressed concerns and said such action should involve fan consultation.
