Manchester United relaxed over Kobbie Mainoo talks due to contract expiry date

Manchester United are in no rush to finalise a new contract for Kobbie Mainoo due to his maximum expiry date.

Mainoo signed a contract last February that was for four years, with the option of an additional year to tie him to the club until 2028.

United have already opened discussions with Mainoo's representatives over a renewal amid his supreme club form and breakthrough at international level.

The 18-year-old attained his first England cap as a substitute in the defeat to Brazil on Saturday and Mainoo was named the man of the match after his full debut in the draw with Belgium on Tuesday night.

Mainoo has played 23 times for United and firmly established himself as their midfield linchpin. He only made his first Premier League start on November 26 and Mainoo has started in 15 of United's past 16 matches.

Alejandro Garnacho, Mainoo's FA Youth Cup-winning teammate, received a new contract last April - less than two years after he inked his first professional deal with United in July 2021.

Garnacho's previous contract ran until 2024 and United had the option of an additional year, contrary to reports in Italy that he was still on a three-year arrangement.

Mainoo's confident cameo against Brazil and dynamic performance against Belgium have all but secured a place in the England squad for the European Championship finals in Germany.
