Manchester United player ratings vs Newcastle as Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford poor

Manchester United suffered a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Newcastle in the Premier League fixture at St James' Park.

Teenager Kobbie Mainoo returned to the midfield, with Anthony Martial preferred to Rasmus Hojlund up front for the Saturday night game.

United struggled to convert any of their chances in the first half with Newcastle going closer to breaking the deadlock. Kieran Trippier hit the bar from a free-kick with goalkeeper Andre Onana beaten but the match remained goalless at half time.

Newcastle's pressure eventually paid off when Anthony Gordon tapped in at the back post after a cross from Trippier. Gordon was completely unmarked and Aaron Wan-Bissaka switched off.

Ten Hag took Marcus Rashford and Martial off for Hojlund and Antony and United had a late goal chalked off for offside. Our chief United writer Samuel Luckhurst was at the game and here are his player ratings.

Andre Onana

Heckled with chants of "dodgy keeper" and he was at the early corner. Denied Miguel Almiron with a standard stop but his kicking was atrocious. 4

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Swamped with Tino Livramento and Anthony Gordon haring at him. Caught napping when Gordon scored at the far post. 4

Harry Maguire

Turned early on by Alexander Isak and conceded the free-kick Kieran Trippier smacked the crossbar from. Made some blocks. 5

Luke Shaw

Back at centre-back when United would have been better off with him at left-back. Did okay, considering Newcastle's dominance. 6

Diogo Dalot

A selection that contradicted Ten Hag's preference for a left-footer at left-back and the experiment backfired again as Newcastle scored from a move down Dalot's side.
