Manchester United have already hinted at new Old Trafford stadium timeframe

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is trying to show that he is an owner that backs up his word, as Manchester United indeed spy a “Wembley of the North”.

The hope is that plans for a 100,000-seater stadium will be submitted before the end of the year with the new co-owner ordering his recently-established regeneration taskforce to draw up proposals by December. Early estimates from today’s market rates suggest that such a seismic move will cost more than £2 billion, yet it is viewed as a more cost-effective project than a revamp of the current ground, of which some sections have fallen into disrepair.

Not every supporter is fond of the idea of a new build, with some fearing a loss of tradition and historicity in a fresh modern stadium. For 114 years, every one of Manchester United Football Club’s players have played their home games on the same patch of land.

The new taskforce - which includes former captain Gary Neville and Manchester mayor Andy Burnham - wishes for any new stadium to stay on the same site, albeit located in the adjacent car park which is situated on land United already own. The desired wider causal effect would see a regeneration of the surrounding community, keeping intact the local ties that have remained attached to the club throughout its history as its worldwide reach continually expands.

The gravitas of the Theatre of Dreams will play no part in Euro 2028, though. The UK and the Republic of Ireland were successful in last year’s bid for the tournament but Old Trafford is not listed within the host venues.
