Olympic Games viewers all make same hilarious Johnny Vegas comparison over 'doppelgänger' commentator

Viewers of the Olympic Games all made the same hilarious observation about the commentary of the gymnastics final on Tuesday (July 30).

The BBC's coverage of the Artistic Gymnastics Women's Team Final quickly caught the attention of viewers, many of whom believed comedian Johnny Vegas was speaking on the voiceover.

The commentator was in fact Craig Heap, from Burnley in Lancashire, who has represented England over 100 times, and Team GB at the 2000 Summer Olympics.

Viewers flocked to social media to point out how similar Heap sounded to the St Helen's comedian, who has starred in the likes of TV's Benidorm and Ideal.

On X, formerly Twitter, user @AntonyThrower86 posted: "Thought for a minute Johnny Vegas was commentating on the women's gymnastics final" as @sendvictorious added: "I tried not to think of Johnny Vegas doing the co-commentary on the gymnastics but alas I have failed."

@dolphindiver hilariously posted: "I'm loving the Olympic gymnastics but is it just me that thinks one of the commentators sounds like Johnny Vegas? I love the image in my head that Johnny is there talking us through all the technicalities of the beam routine..."

And user @BStroudMusic wrote: "A vocal doppelgänger for Johnny Vegas is doing a fabulous job commentating the women’s Olympic team gymnastics."

But it appeared a number of other viewers on Tuesday believed that the commentator was, in fact, Vegas, as they heaped praise on the BBC for his supposed appointment.
