Manchester United fans have new reason to be angry with Glazers after Kylian Mbappe 'decision'

Manchester United shocked the Premier League when they re-signed Cristiano Ronaldo last summer. The back page of the Manchester Evening News read 'BACK HOME' with capital letters etched across and it felt like an edition worthy of a keepsake for fans.

It was a monumental signing and it sent reverberations around the Premier League, despite the five-time Ballon d'Or being in the winter of his career. Ronaldo was still the closest thing to a guarantee of goals and he delivered in spades last season, scoring an impressive total of 24 in a side devoid of cohesion and confidence. Ronaldo had played his part following his homecoming.

Ronaldo re-signing for United was arguably the biggest story of the summer and there was no doubt that he was the 'marquee' arrival at Old Trafford, with Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho also signing for the club.

Those were three outstanding signings on paper, but Varane was consistently injured and Sancho was consistently underwhelming last season, which made Ronaldo the only successful transfer. United should be in the position to deliver marquee signings every summer, but Ronaldo had been the first since Paul Pogba signed for £89million in 2016 and he was also in his latter years.

Sources told the MEN that the Glazers believed a Ronaldo homecoming would get them back onside with supporters following the European Super League debacle, but that was naive and indicative of how out of touch they are with fan sentiment.
