'Convinced he will join' - Manchester United fans react to Cody Gakpo transfer comments

Manchester United were heavily linked with a move for PSV Eindhoven's Cody Gakpo in the summer transfer window. With the future of Cristiano Ronaldo uncertain, the club were weighing up their options in the transfer market.

A move did not materialise and since then Gakpo has gone on to build on his already impressive form from last season. The forward has scored 13 goals and registered 11 assists this season across all competitions, an output that only Erling Haaland comes close to.

So of course, United fans have been looking on enviously - and Gakpo's latest interview will have done little to calm the situation.

He told The Times : "Manchester United talks ended about a week before the end of the transfer window... so in that final week, I had to decide if I would go to Southampton or Leeds. In the end I stayed at PSV, yes - but it was a stressful period.

"I was close to leaving PSV. I spoke to Erik ten Hag a few times at Manchester United, in the end, the deal didn’t go through... and it was a shame."

He added: "Manchester United is one of the biggest clubs in the world".

After these comments, many United fans doubled down on social media, demanding that the club and Ten Hag bring in the forward as soon as possible. The goals have not been freely flowing for United this season and with Anthony Martial's constant injury issues it may be necessary to bring in some reinforcements.

These are a selection of responses from fans on Twitter:
