Manchester United fans announce Old Trafford protest against Mason Greenwood return

A group of Manchester United fans are protesting against the prospect of Mason Greenwood playing for the club again.

United are due to communicate their decision on his future imminently after a six-month investigation, following an announcement from Greater Manchester Police on February 2 that Greenwood no longer faced criminal proceedings.

Greenwood had been charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour and assault. He last played for the club in the 1-0 win against West Ham on January 22, 2022.

Greenwood always protested his innocence about the allegations. In a statement released on Greenwood's behalf, the 21-year-old said: "I am relieved that this matter is now over and I would like to thank my family, loved ones and friends for their support.

"There will be no further comment at this time."

The Crown Prosecution Service dropped all charges against Greenwood on 2 February, 2023 and United have conducted their own inquiries as they 'determine the next steps', with the club's decision expected before the opening game of the season against Wolves.

Ahead of that game against Wolves on Monday night, a number of supporters have shared their intention to protest against the possibility of Greenwood returning to the squad by releasing a statement on social media.

The fan group have urged United not to welcome Greenwood back into the team and 'for the club to make the right decision'.

Erik ten Hag is understood to be reluctant to sell Greenwood and United are considering the possibility of a loan for him.

The forward has not returned to United’s Carrington training complex since the charges were dropped.
