Manchester United ace Christian Eriksen sets FA Cup target ahead of Wigan fixture

Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen is targeting a successful FA Cup run this season ahead of Monday night's third round tie with Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium.

Currently eighth in the Premier League, out of the Champions League and out of the Carabao Cup, the FA Cup is United's only realistic hope of winning a trophy this season. The Reds reached the final of the competition last term, losing 2-1 to Manchester City at Wembley.

Facing League One opposition in the third round, United are overwhelming favourites to progress to the next stage of the competition and keep their hopes of winning any silverware this term around. The Latics, however, are no strangers to a cup upset, beating City to win the competition in 2013 and then dumping them out in the fifth round in 2018.

With that in mind, United can ill-afford to simply rock up at the DW Stadium and expect to progress to the fourth round without any difficulties. Despite that, Eriksen, who vowed to look forward following last weekend's defeat to Nottingham Forest, is hopeful the Reds can go far in the world's oldest club competition this term.

Eriksen, speaking to United's club website, said: "I heard the other day it was the oldest tournament in the world and as I said, I've been in England for a long time and the FA Cup has always been something special to the fans and to the players for each club in it.
