Man United hit with huge FA fine after fiery Chelsea clash as Ruud van Nistelrooy issue emerges

Manchester United have been hit with a huge Football Association fine after they passed the disciplinary threshold during their meeting with Chelsea on Sunday.

The clash between these two teams has historically been often a feisty one, and it was no different at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon. Bruno Fernandes was only able to give Man United the lead after Robert Sanchez gave away a penalty, whilst Lisandro Martinez caused controversy when picking up a yellow card that prompted a Premier League statement once VAR deemed it unworthy of an upgrade to a red card.

The Argentine's booking was one of six picked up by the hosts' players during the game against the Blues. Other offenders were Manuel Ugarte, Diogo Dalot, Marcus Rashford, Casemiro and Amad Diallo.

As all five plus Martinez were punished all in the same match, under FA law this automatically qualifies the club for a £25,000 fine over a lack of discipline.

The Manchester Evening News understands, though, that due to the fact United are repeat offenders now in the 2024/25 campaign - having been shown five yellows and one red card during the 3-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur - the fine this time is increased from the regular amount to £50,000. This is in spite of the fact Fernandes' sending off that day was later rescinded by the Premier League following an appeal.
