Man United £125m transfer decision hands Ruben Amorim wildcard that will save millions
It's fair to say that Manchester United have successfully built excitement around them this summer with Matheus Cunha already signed and Bryan Mbeumo imminent. But excitement brings expectation.
United went into the transfer window with little expectation. An eighth-placed finish in the Premier League under Erik ten Hag was followed by an 15th-placed finish under Ruben Amorim - the club's worst season in 51 years.
Excitement has also been lacking at Old Trafford. United lost nine home games in the league last term, scoring 23 and conceding 28. Tottenham, Bournemouth, Brighton, Crystal Palace, Wolves and West Ham all enjoyed journeys to the Theatre of Dreams.
However, like it or not, the page has turned and the new season offers a fresh perspective where dreams are created. United have to do better than last campaign but, realistically, a top-five finish has to be the objective.
Cunha's £62.5million signing from Wolves at the start of the summer got the ball rolling. The Brazilian is a ready-made signing with experience in the Premier League, scoring 27 in 65 league games in a struggling Wolves team.
Mbeumo's numbers are even better. The Brentford ace is set to come in after United submitted an offer in excess of £60million this week and will slot perfectly in the vacant role alongside Cunha behind the striker. Mbeumo scored 20 Premier League goals last season; that's more goals than Alejandro Garnacho, Rasmus Hojlund, Joshua Zirkzee and Marcus Rashford combined.
Bruno Fernandes and Amad were United's top-scorers in the Premier League with eight. The pair are two crucial profiles to Amorim's system and are expected to play big parts. However, there's a question lurking over the head of Carrington on Amad.
