Man City have three options to replace Kevin De Bruyne as captain during injury

With Kevin De Bruyne potentially out until the turn of the new year, Manchester City have been left without a club captain, so who should the sky blues promote to the role to fill his absence?

De Bruyne only became City captain over the summer, after former skipper Ilkay Gundogan exited the club following an incredibly successful seven-year spell in Manchester. The 32-year-old German won five Premier League titles, two FA Cups, four EFL Cups and the Champions League before his summer move to Barcelona.

As Manchester City’s current longest-serving player, it was a no-brainer to reward the decorated De Bruyne with the armband. However, 23 minutes into their season-opener against Burnley disaster struck as the midfielder was forced off with a worrying injury. It was later revealed that the player would miss a huge part of the season with the midfielder ruled out for a number of months through the injury.

In their two fixtures so far without the Belgium international since his injury, Kyle Walker has taken the armband. The England international captained the side in both victories over Sevilla in the UEFA Super Cup and Newcastle United in the Premier League.

Walker appears to fit the description of a great captain, the defender having a great presence and obtaining the confidence needed to lead a team of superstars like the Cityzens’ have. Another option for City’s armband is that of Spain international Rodri, the central-defensive midfielder writing his name in the history of the Cityzens forever in June of this year - scoring City’s Champions League winning goal in their 1-0 win over Inter Milan in Istanbul.
