Man City have been victim of circumstance in Matheus Nunes and Eberechi Eze transfer pursuit

Manchester City have another big transfer in them before next week's summer deadline.

Pep Guardiola's side concluded their pursuit of Jeremy Doku on Thursday. The winger arrives in a £55.5million deal, giving City another wide option after the departure of Riyad Mahrez.

City always wanted to add another option to their ranks and Doku will provide one-vs-one dribbling ability on either flank, akin to Mahrez. He'll compete with Cole Palmer and Phil Foden for minutes on the right wing.

The big question marks remains whether City will enter the market to bolster their midfield. MEN Sport reported this week that Wolves' Matheus Nunes and Crystal Palace creator Eberechi Eze are both on their shortlist.

Any deal for Lucas Paqueta is now dead in the water but it's clear that City want to improve their options before the close of play next Friday, though.

A deal for either player will be tricky given the timing of their pursuit. As the deadline edges closer, neither club will want to sell a prized asset and would want to source a replacement too.

The interest is, of course, instigated by the injury to Kevin de Bruyne. The Belgian midfielder is unlikely to play again in 2023 and that has forced City's hand after Ilkay Gundogan left.

There is never an ideal time to lose an influential player like De Bruyne but his injury has fallen at a particularly inopportune moment, considering who City have targeted to replace him. Had it been earlier in the summer, securing a deal for Eze or Nunes might have been more straightforward.
